About the Festival

The Rajarata Independent Film Festival (RIFF) is an independent, community-rooted celebration of world cinema, held annually in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Our first edition brings together filmmakers, cinephiles, and cultural enthusiasts to experience diverse stories on the big screen — from global perspectives to local voices.

RIFF is more than just screenings. It is a cultural gathering where cinema becomes a bridge for dialogue, reflection, and inspiration. Through free public events, workshops, and discussions, we aim to make independent cinema accessible to rural audiences while connecting Sri Lanka with the global film community.

Our Mission

  • To showcase powerful, independent films from around the world.

  • To create a platform for cultural dialogue in Sri Lanka.

  • To bring cinema to rural audiences and nurture new voices in filmmaking.

Why Anuradhapura?

As one of the world’s most historic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura offers a unique backdrop for an international film festival. Its cultural richness and vibrant community make it the perfect setting for a festival that celebrates both art and heritage.

Our Commitment

We are dedicated to building a festival that is inclusive, accessible, and inspiring — a space where audiences, artists, and communities come together through the magic of cinema.
